What changed for your money in 2026

Income tax

• Federal brackets: 14% to $58,523, 20.5% to $117,045, 26% to $181,440, 29% to $258,482, 33% above $258,482. The lowest rate is 14% for the full year (it was a blended 14.5% in 2025).
• Federal basic personal amount $16,452 (was $16,129); Canada employment amount $1,501.
• British Columbia raised its lowest rate to 5.60% for all of 2026 and its tax reduction to $690; brackets are frozen for 2027 to 2030.
• Newfoundland and Labrador raised its basic personal amount to $13,094 for 2026 ($15,000 in 2027).
• Prince Edward Island added a 20% bracket above $200,000.
• Manitoba froze its brackets at $47,000 and $100,000 and its basic personal amount at $15,780.
• Nova Scotia now indexes brackets (1.6%) and removed the income test on its basic personal amount.
• Quebec brackets indexed 2.05%; basic personal amount $18,952.

CPP, QPP and EI

• CPP maximum pensionable earnings $74,600 (was $71,300); second ceiling $85,000 (was $81,200); maximum employee contribution $4,230.45 plus $416.00 CPP2.
• QPP employee rate 6.30% (base rate cut to 5.30%); QPIP rates fell about 13% to 0.430% on earnings up to $103,000.
• EI rate 1.63% (was 1.64%) on earnings up to $68,900; maximum premium $1,123.07.
• Announced for 2027: the base CPP rate falls from 9.9% to 9.5% (employee 4.95% to 4.75%).

Savings accounts

• TFSA limit $7,000 (unchanged); cumulative room since 2009 $109,000.
• RRSP limit $33,810 for 2026 and $35,390 for 2027.
• FHSA unchanged at $8,000 a year, $40,000 lifetime.
• RESP additional grant and Canada Learning Bond income thresholds rose to $58,523 and $117,045.

Pensions and benefits

• Maximum CPP at 65 $1,507.65 a month; CPP benefits indexed 2.0%.
• OAS $751.97 a month (65 to 74) for July to September 2026; recovery tax threshold $95,323 of 2026 income.
• Canada Child Benefit $8,157 per child under 6 and $6,883 for 6 to 17 for July 2026 to June 2027; phase-out starts at $38,237.

Housing

• The first-time home buyers' GST/HST rebate became law on March 12, 2026 (Bill C-4): 100% of the GST on a new home up to $1,000,000, a maximum of $50,000, phasing out at $1,500,000, for agreements signed on or after March 20, 2025.
• Ontario removed the full 13% HST on new homes up to $1,000,000 for any buyer signing between April 1, 2026 and March 31, 2027 (up to $130,000), and matched the federal first-time rebate with up to $80,000 of the provincial part.
• The federal Underused Housing Tax was eliminated for 2025 and later years (Royal Assent March 26, 2026); 2022 to 2024 returns are still owed.
• The foreign buyer ban runs to January 1, 2027 and is under review; Toronto's 10% municipal non-resident speculation tax (on top of Ontario's 25%) has applied since January 1, 2025.
• Toronto's municipal land transfer tax rates above $3,000,000 rose to 4.40% to 8.60% on April 1, 2026.
• Quebec introduced a refundable tax credit of up to $5,875 that repays most of the welcome tax for first-time buyers; Quebec brackets indexed to $62,900 and $315,000.
• Bank of Canada policy rate 2.25% as of September 2, 2026; stress test unchanged at the greater of contract rate plus 2% and 5.25%; insured cap $1,500,000.

Business and investments

• Capital gains inclusion rate stays at 50%; the lifetime capital gains exemption is $1,275,000.
• Ontario's small business rate falls from 3.2% to 2.2% on July 1, 2026; Quebec's to 2.2% for years starting after April 29, 2026; Newfoundland and Labrador's to 2%.
• No sales tax rate changes; BC's PST base broadens on October 1, 2026.
• PEI's new Employment Standards Act took effect June 30, 2026 (6% vacation pay after 5 years; holiday pay 5% of four weeks' wages).
